These considerations make the use of the backcalculation technique limited when there is little experience. Furthermore, additional considerations include equipment calibration, the surface and pavement temperature, the available layer thickness information, or the optimization algorithm (which in general, regardless of the adjustment factor, does not guarantee a reliable result). However, this procedure requires a vast understanding of pavement engineering and materials and can be greatly biased based on selected seed moduli, incorrectly modeled material behavior, and the structural integrity of each layer. The backcalculation procedure is an essential tool in the assessment of existing pavements since is applied to obtain the existing layers’ moduli as a structural analysis parameter.
